Adventure games that respect your time
I used to think longer meant better. Then I played a string of padded adventures and realised most of their length was busywork. Hollow Tide Chronicle changed my mind by wrapping up in around five focused hours.
A tight adventure keeps its puzzles logical and its story moving. There's no wandering an empty map looking for the one pixel you missed. A good hint system helps here — it should nudge, never spoil.
On mobile especially, a five-hour game you finish beats a forty-hour one you abandon. Completion is its own kind of satisfaction.
So when a friend asks what to play next, I increasingly point them at the short, confident games. They tend to be the ones people actually remember.
